openSUSE DVD/CD cover art: Opinions wanted!

openSUSE 11.2 is scheduled to be officially released in about a week (give or take a few hours…) and, as usual, we’re gearing up to press a bunch of media for shows and the ambassadors.

Typically Novell has created the artwork for the openSUSE DVDs, but this time around we had some really interesting and creative input from openSUSE contributors.

Here are the choices — vote in the poll box below or to the right!

openSUSE Art Proposal 1

#1: DVD Cover 1

openSUSE Art Proposal 2

#2: DVD Cover 2

openSUSE Art Proposal 3

#3: DVD Cover 3

So, which one would you choose? Yes, I have a favorite. No, I’m not telling. Yes, there’s a ringer in the house…

Other details on the openSUSE DVDs:

  • You asked for 64-bit, you’ve got it! We’re creating dual-sided media for openSUSE so that we have 32-bit media on one side, 64-bit on the other. This will be especially handy for folks (like me) who have a smattering of 32-bit only hardware still laying around.
  • Live CDs: In the past, we’ve not created live CD media, but we wanted to provide some swag for GNOME and KDE specific events — so, we’re going to be creating a limited amount of live CDs that we will provide at events.

After the 11.2 release we’ll provide details on how to get media for events and so on. Sorry, we’re unable to handle individual orders for openSUSE DVDs. If you don’t want to mess with downloading openSUSE for your personal use and don’t need a full retail kit, I’d recommend checking out On-Disk.com or CheapBytes. Information on retail boxes will be forthcoming soon.

Update: Thanks for all the comments! Polling and comments are now closed. Winner will be announced shortly.

  1. Fuffo says:

Number 3… the professional one ;-)

  2. lumnis says:

i like the simplicity in #3, but the colors are too dark/brown-ish.
I agree with Oto tapik Buchta

It reminds me a bit of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtEsSdP6sR8

  3. v3nk! says:

    # 1 is lookin damn good

  4. Ulrich Windl says:

On #1: It’s unclear what the “white 3D thing” on the right should be

    On #2: I’d prefer that

On #3: I think everybody knows that a DVD is inside, so there’s little sense to have a large picture of an (empty) DVD on the cover

  5. Jos van Kan says:

I like the distinguished nobility of #3.

  6. Alastairo says:

I said to my daughter that #1 was most voted for and that #2 was a close second.
She replied that #2 usually is a close second !

  7. tunjin says:

hello i vote #2, but not write “dvd 11.2 i386″ best write dvd 11.2″ not i386 ok? but not screenshot desktop only for “gnome”!!
best add screenshot: YAST and Gnome desktop and KDE4 desktop ok? add app: KOFFICE 2.2 or 2.0..effect desktop (compiz,KWIN)

  8. Herby says:

I like #3, because it’s simple, elegant and matches the colors of the openSUSE 11.2 desktop. The two other designs look more like they are made for 11.1.

  9. Peter Semisotov says:

    # 3 is most instyle to 11.2 couse i install it and see it’s branding :) but need more work on it, agree with “Ulrich Windl” not DVD image need on cover but transparent geko of same size and position may be replace it …

  10. Arthur Taylor says:

All 3 have their good points, but I think 3 looks the most professional – and that’s what I expect from openSUSE.

  11. kayo says:

The #3 is more ‘solid’ for me.

  12. ttyX says:

#1 Looks good and #2 isn’t bad either but my vote foes to #1 ;)

  13. I voted for #3 since it matches the openSUSE 11.2 theme.

  14. Steve says:

Picked #2 because of the lighter background.
    Prefer the printing/layout of #3.
Since I dislike the color green, none of them suit me completely.
I would prefer a color similar to Novell blue.

  15. flens says:

a cover should be desktop environment neutral.

  16. lein says:

I think #2 is good coz of prejudice that suse is green. #3 is also good, but it’s not green.

  17. Bj says:

    I like #3. A subtle approach.

  18. Navy says:

#3: looks quite dull to fit the looks of SUSE 11.2
    #2: color mismatch
#4: very trendy and my favorite

  19. Navy says:

#3: looks quite dull to fit the looks of SUSE 11.2
    #2: color mismatch
#1: very trendy and my favorite

  20. I think # 3 is better cover for OpenSuSe 11.2 ²

  21. Salid says:

Cover #3 ist definitivly more in the design line with the 11.2 distro than the other ones.

  22. Hernan_ says:

I sure that a mix of #1 & #3 would be the best cover =)
#1 a bit fuzzy and #3 too serious (formal).

    Don’t u think so??

  23. Pietro says:

I would suggest to write the word ¨Linux¨ somewhere… with a not too small font!

  24. Mike Glenn says:

If you want business appeal, go with #3: For some reason, minimalism appeals to the front office.
If you want to appeal to hobbyists and home users, however, I would recommend #2: There is a short explanation of the contents, and the bright green catches the eye.

  25. jscurtu says:

I like Cover #3 … but why not have a Screenshot of the KDE desktop and the Gnome desktop as they are both on there… The FSpot Screenshot on there should be removed…

  26. Dave Lyon says:

I agree with Javier- #3 is actually representative of the look of the 11.2 theme. #2 looks like a case for 11.1 and #1, although it’s not too bad seems to have a fear of empty space- too much going on.

  27. Dean Hilkewich says:

Cover 3, but get rid of the FSpot pic and show a screen shot of the default desktop with some suse specific items showing such as YaST.

  28. William says:

I think by now we all, that use Open Suse know it qualities so therefore simply stating what’s inside so professionalism and distinction.

  29. Daniel says:

#3 is the best one, visually appealing at not overloaded with stuff like #1 and #2…. but one thing all covers share and which really destroys the professionalism… please, please check the sentences. Some are to complicated, others simply miss a word or have too many words.

An example: check cover #3, the paragraph below the icons. “This DVD includes everything to make…. your server up and running”. English isn’t my native language, but do you really make servers up and running or shouldn’t there be a different verb used?

  30. Radu says:

#3 really looks both professional and appealing. Daniel, I run a FTP server on the machine from which I’m posting this comment, so yes, it really makes the server up and running :)

  31. Greg says:

The text in #3 is unacceptably small.

  32. Bart Otten says:

#3: looks very professional and in line with the openSUSE 11.2 artwork. Totaly #3

  33. Hideaki says:

Combine background of #3 with the information of #1.

  34. Steven says:

#3 looks very professional, in fact too professional. openSUSE+KDE isn’t that stable! I like #2 best, because it is very energetic and best reflects the rapid ongoing development.

  35. Matt location Hobart Tasmania says:

Looks Professional and appealing, I hope it gets the vote.

G’Day to all From Hobart Tasmania, located below Australia

  36. David Smith says:

None of them are great but at least no. 1 has the elements of greatness, they just need to be put together on its front.

No. 2 is boring and dated.

No. 3 is somber and unappealing, like a funeral notice. What, are you kidding?

If I saw them as three products side-by-side on a POS display. my eye instantly gravitates to No. 1. The other two aren’t even in the race. However if I isolate only the front covers, the race is much closer. No 1. cover is unfinished. In fact the back is more appealing than the front. The front looks too simple, like a no name brand.

  37. Eberhard Urban says:

#3 is best – less is more – but I miss the word “Linux”

  38. reddaygr says:

There is a version of 1 that kinda fused elements of all 3 designs… but the “fused” version didnt made it to the poll… check it

  39. Mark says:

Front #3, rear #1. I think it would be great mix.

  40. Kim says:

#1 For sure, 3rd one doesn’t even have it’s sponsor on it, how come?! it also has an trademark that is not registered on the contest, “Tango Media”…so ahm, you guys are selling the dvd of OpenSUSE on TANGO MEDIA Dvds? I hope you do, or you’ll get really ganked..

  41. Rainer Hurtado Navarro says:

Number 3 is the finest, but I think that the sample cover number 1 includes a double-leave design providing the SuSE social network that worth to be considered, even as it is, or as a solution or information to be included in sample cover number 3. However, I would like more screenshots showing the openSuSE environments, but not placed side by side, spacefully, but stacked (like a stairs), so the space taken for the images do not be wided.

  42. Anatoli Iliev says:

I think #1 looks perfect and like it most :)

  43. patch_linams says:

Although the third one is professional it is too monotonous. The second one has more 11.1 flavor. The first one is in-between, the good thing is it has no desktop screenshots and represents an advancement based on open source software.

  44. moravec says:

I prefer #3. It looks elegant && professional. However, “II.2″ is little confusing for me at first glance. Evoking “2.2″. I would change it to “11.2″.

  45. iansyah says:

    I like no. 2.
    It’s so energetic….

  46. David Smith says:

    @reddaygr

“There is a version of 1 that kinda fused elements of all 3 designs”

Urgh, that ghastly, unrelieved dead spinach green again…

No, no. 1 is still the best.
