New Kindle on the way

TechCrunch reports that there’s a new Kindle on the way for “early Q1.”

Looking at the redesign, it certainly looks nicer than the first generation devices, but on the other hand… I don’t see anything that’s going to inspire me to purchase the new one while my existing Kindle works just fine.

Totally agree with the post, though — Amazon should license the platform and let others work on the hardware. I love lots of things about the Kindle, but the overall design could have been vastly improved — and I’d really like to see a multifunction device that incorporates the Kindle functionality rather than yet another standalone device that weighs me down. (Admittedly less than a bag full of books, but still…)
