Avoid Fifth Third Bank at all costs…

Without going into a great deal of detail, let me just say that if you’re looking for a bank for a checking or savings account, or if you have a choice of banks for an auto loan or other type of loan avoid Fifth Third Bank if at all humanly possible.

Long story short: I’ve been fighting with Fifth Third Bank for a couple of months now about providing proof of insurance for my car between October and December of 2007. (Fifth Third has the loan on my car.)

In December of 2007, they sent me a letter saying that they had no proof of insurance (I’ve had State Farm since 1989, without a lapse in coverage since) and would be billing me retroactively for coverage during that period until I provide proof of insurance. They sent this to the wrong address because they failed to update my address after I went to a local branch of the bank and gave a teller the new information along with a payment.

Now, how it’s legal for a company to retroactively bill for insurance coverage, I have no idea — since I can obviously make no use of insurance for a period of time that has passed — but they’ve either claimed they did not receive proof of insurance from State Farm or refused to accept the form of proof from State Farm several times now. I’ve spent well over five hours of my time calling Fifth Third about this problem and have also no doubt wasted quite a lot of my insurance agent’s time.

With any luck, it will be resolved soon — but I will be looking to pay this loan off early or find another lender to allow me to get away from Fifth Third and warn as many people as possible to avoid doing any business with this bank.

What galls me most of all is that the bank acknowledges they’ve spoken to State Farm and have been told that, yes, I do and have had coverage — but they refuse to accept that as confirmation. They also accept no blame for failing to update my address, and no shame whatsoever about trying to charge me for insurance during a period of time that has already passed and can be of no use whatsoever except as a penalty for not assisting the bank with their shoddy recordkeeping.

I’ve been a 5/3 customer for eight years (car loan, checking and savings). Our local branches are excellent (central Indiana) and I’ve never had a problem with them at all! Once when we were almost about to incur a fee for not keeping $5.00 minimum in savings, the gal called my husband and we took care of it online. I think they’re great, I mean, as great as a bank can be. I am truly sorry for anyone who has had a bad experience, because I’ve had some go-rounds with other industries- i.e. health insurance, that just wiped me out emotionally with all the run-around. Just thought I’d pipe up! I love my local branches, but then maybe Indiana people are just nicer in general ( ha ha).

    5/3 has ruined my life.

They repossessed my car the night before we were to get a loan to pay it off. They tried to repo my truck and threatened us several times using vulgar language.

After turning in the truck to be done with them once and for all, they hit us with a $400 tire fee–months after the fact. We have been disputing this since 2005 and just last week we received a court summons. Apparently they hired a collection agency to come after us, tacking on fee after fee. Since we disputed it, we’re now being taken to court.

I’m fighting back and not taking this crap!

Perhaps all of us on this comment page should do a class action lawsuit!!!!

    • When i was moving from one state to another, i called them to make sure they update my address and send me billings but guess what? they didn’t update my address correctly, sent the billings to some weird address, acknowledged & apologized over the phone and charged me $120 late charges (2005). Now, on a $350 original balance, i owe $1,600. To this date, i am fighting but no resolution. They have been reporting key derogatory for two years now. Moroever, the KD was going to drop in 2014 but they updated my credit file such that now its going to fall off in Dec, 2016. I don’t know how they can do it but they did it somehow. In addition, now in 2010, they are completely denying that they sent the billings to some wrong address. I think a bunch of money hungry hogs work for this bank and that’s why it’s still in business. Withi this bank, i have gotten nothing but grief, wastage of my time, ruined credit and anger. Please be in good terms with this bank; else, they are not the one you want to mess with.

I’ve never had much interaction with 5/3 bank until recently. I was a cosigner on my now ex-wife’s vehicle loan. She had moved out of state last year and became delinquent on her account. I never received any notice of this at my address and it obviously hurt my credit score. So this year I go to refinance and my credit score is diving due to my ex-wife’s account being about 80 days delinquent. By the way, my ex received a DUI and totalled the car in January of 09. There was a gap and she still owed 6.5K on the loan after the insurance payoff. I quickly took out a loan from my credit union and payed off the total balance owed on the car. I’ve called them every single day to get this straightened out and have not been able to speak to clear English speaking person as of yet. Very frustrating. Two people over the phone told me the full payoff balance and then said when I go to to a local branch and pay off the loan amount to call them with the transaction #. I went to the local branch, they told me the full payoff balance, and I pay it in full. I called back with the transaction # and they say there’s also a late fee of $100.40. Nobody, after speaking to several people with 5/3, ever told me anything about any late fees due. Also since I’m the cosigner they never have my information, so every time I call I have to give them all my information over again, about 10 times already. Don’t they put this into their records. They obviously have my ssn because they report this account to the credit bureaus. I know I’ll never do any business with 5/3 because their customer service, in my experience, is very poor, obviously outsourced overseas, and you get stuck on the merry-go-round of call this department and then call the department you just called. Who has the time for this? What a damn headache.

  5. ken tobias says:

Merchants beware! Fifth Thirds charge card approvals make be useless! They gave us absolute approval many times over for three overseas sales. They assured us that, if we had their approvals, the money could not be retrieved. When there was a question, we provided non-refutable paper trails on the sales including proof of delivery. Then, without notice, they took over $10,000 from our account! Then they claimed that they never gave approval! Merchants beware! Don’t process through Fifth Third Bank!!! As hard as we’re trying, we feel the money is lost causing our business an almost terminal hardship!

  6. ken says:

Same guy as the one above! We keep trying, they keep lying!!

I live near a small town that has about 4 banks and 3 credit unions. I have been dealing with 5th 3rd since they tool over 2 banks in the same town. They then had to sell one??? I hate the way I am treated. Their bank is the only one you cannot call direct. Instead I get a central phone dispatch tningy and have to pick a option #3 to get my bank. They 90% of the time will not answer and it takes several calls to reach them. I am saying goodbye to that bank ver shortly after reading more about 5th/3rd banks.

  8. Qunicy says:

I’ve been with 5/3 for almost 10 years. I got my mortgage through them and the transaction went smoothly. I hate this bank now. They are so money hungry and selfish, they dont care anything about their customers like they use to. Most employees there I talk to are so rude and snotty. They entered a deposit when I was there in person, got my transaction receipt and everything. A few days later I get a letter in the mail, saying that I have all these overdraft fees. (Make a long story short, 1of the idiots didnt complete the process). So I had to get in my car, drive over there with my new born baby at the time and show them my receipt. The chick had attitude with me because of their mix up. She didnt even apologize. They need to screen their employees more also. This bank is in Louisville, KY

I have also had HORRIBLE experiences with 5th TURD bank. I only joined this bank because the company I paid my rent through only excepted payments at this bank. I can recall a time they called me on my cell to tell me that they were putting a hold on my account because I had items posted to come through and I did not have enough funds to cover them. However, I had direct deposit and my check was going to be deposited the following day, so what was the problem. I have also gone in and had some funds refunded back into my account because of their mistakes. I have been dealing with 5th TURD for 8 long years and I am also closing my account on Monday, 6/29/09. I travel out of town a lot, down south, and their are no 5th TURD banks down that way so their for I am left having to travel with a lump sum of money or hit with an ATM fee for retrieving MY money out of the bank. Also, I ordered a bank card from them over the phone and after 7 business days I went inside the bank for the teller to tell me that it has been sent out to give it another day or so. So, I waited another 5 business and returned to the bank for another teller to tell me that the card had been canceled, would you like for me to reorder it. I was like what the hell. So, I had to wait another 7 days on a card that I should of gotten weeks ago. I could go on and on but I’ll let others share their thoughts of 5th TURD. TWO THUMBS DOWN TO 5TH THURD

as soon as i took out money they charged me again and recharged the original funds and know they won’t return my calls.DO NOT BANK AT 5TH 3RD.

  12. Chris says:

Fifth Third Bank keeps calling and calling for Janet L. Foster who either had our phone number before or gave a false phone number. It’s always a machine asking us to enter her pin number and we can’t get a real person on the phone. We have called headquarters many times and they just play dumb. We are now in the process of filing a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General to get them to stop. We have never been inside a Fifth Third building let alone done business with them.

  13. Donna M says:

I opened a credit card acct with 5/3nat zero interest for 1 year. I never received a bill for the first payment. By chance I called to ask about this and found out the next day was the due date! I are very careful with my mail and my bills and know that they did not send me a bill. I will be very carefull with this account and will close it as soon as I am able! Also I can’t believe that they do not accept on line payments seems that they want you to be late!

  14. Mike says:

Thank you for taking the time to air your discontent with 5/3. I was a page away from calling 5/3 to open a small business account when I read your compliant. I will not be calling them now.

500% profit is what Fifth Third bank earned from me today. I had a 76cent overdraft and they charged me the 37.00 overdraft fee!!! I deposited $50.00 this morning at 9:25 to cover this and at 8:02 pm the 37.00 overdraft fee hasn’t posted. If the teller hadn’t told me the fee was going to be posted I could have gone off and spent more than the $12.00 I have left after the overdraft fee. I suppose it will be posted at midnight tonight.
Last night at 9pm I checked my bank balance and all was well at 8am i checked it again and had the .76 overdraft!!! The teller with no customer service skills told me I could have made an ATM deposit!!!to avoid the overdraft. I am not in the habit of checking this account through the night!!! This bank doesn’t care and as soon as I am off unemployment I am changing banks. I hate this bank and tell everyone I know how a customer is treated. My Pastor was once a customer until he “got it” and left. he too doesn’t have kind words for this bank.

  16. jason says:

The problems you all are having are mostly your own fault. Most have to do with current laws and policies that run banks. I bank with fifth third have for more than 10 yrs and have had some problems with them late fees (paid on time or early in some cases), overlimit fees (either my fault b/c of mismanagement, b/c 5/3 took a payment earlier than what it was set for). If you read the contracts you sign, user agreements and manage your money wisely you take away most problems you will have with any banking institution. I worked at a call center while in college for Wells Fargo and City Bank as well as working at a branch at National City Bank. I heard these same complaints and in some cases its the banks fault, others its the customers fault and in some cases its both parties fault; the banks for lending you the money and yours for spending way beyond your means. I talked to customers who received a loan to buy an escalade when they work the window at taco bell. People who put $5000 sound systems in their car put wouldn’t pay their monthly loan payment of $250. I’ve talked to people who at no fault of their own received penalties and fees based on operator/human error or in some instances computer error. In some cases we lower employees can fix the problem but in some instances we can’t, we just do our jobs and have to go by the rules as you do at your job. Sometimes going above us works if you stay calm and work your way up the latter, which I know is frustrating but when you get an attitude and cuss out the lower level employees we have no reason to care to help you, get through the chain of command and it is against fed laws to curse over the phone so we have the right to either end the call politely or just hang up. Being calm about situations helps you out more and I know its frustrating bb&t lost my insurance info and charged me for gap it took me 8 months to get it straightened out with calls every week from both me and my insurance agent. Then it took another 5 months to get my refund for all the fees and money paid towards gap. I no longer have any dealings with that bank but know it could of happend regardless of where I banked

  17. Donna says:

All of the negative comments made “I do believe” are true. 5th 3rd is MOST corrupt bank ever. Only way you could like them is if you are filthy rich and never take a dime of money out of your account just let it sit there. I think they’d still find a way to get it though.
Right now I’m fighting with them to sign an insurance check from State Farm cause their name is also on check was told wouldn’t be problem all they need to do is sign it. But because we don’t have an account with them anymore, (whole other story) but still have our mortgage with them “regretably” they say they are going to take over the insurance check and what we have fixed on our home. I don’t think so!! Incredible that this bank keeps on going. Biggest crooks ever!!

  18. Joel says:

    Man I’m angry!

I accidentally “transferred” $1,000 from one of my credit cards with a balance to a zero balance, never been used before card. I thought it was a balance transfer but turns out transfer means payment (the cash withdrawl kind). One of my accounts was negative $1,000 and the other had a balance now $1,000 higher plus fees. Then to correct the cash advance, I transferred back to the other card. That just doubled the fees.

After calling customer “service” they wouldn’t waive the very obvious mistake fees. Wow, I really can’t believe it.

But, if we’re all smart, and if the stories in this thread are true, there is definitely room to explore lawsuits.

I’m furious with them. Don’t do business with Fifth Third. Even their web user interface is far behind the times. Stay away, too many other good choices out there.

E-mail: chummer222@yahoo.com if there’s a similar story of credit card transfer cash advance fee errors. I might pursue legal action ($200 is $200, ya know). If there’s more than 10 similar, we can go class action status, perhaps.

I have live here for eight months and my husband and i bought a house. To our much regreted mistake we used 5/3 bank. They just hit me with 345 in over draft charges. They didn,t know my address or my phone number. Waite a minute, what about my paper work????????? I have learned a valuable lesson here. But i will be relocating my mortgage and accts. BE WARE 5/3 BANK CAN’T FIND THEIR ASS WITH BOTH HANDS.

  20. DR says:

I would advise everyone to stay away from 5th 3rd Bank even if it means higher rates. You will come out better in the long run. We ended up paying over $1000 in unknown service charges. Were turned over to a collection agency, after we received the title to the truck and a letter saying that the trcuck was paid in full, who said that we only owed $960. . Then we received numerous calls from 5th 3rd for the other $170. When you answer the phone you are put on hold which runs up your minutes on your cell phone. Take my advice DO NOT FINANCE WITH 5TH 3RD.

  21. Kim says:

Well let’s see….we were behind on our trailer pmt by 30 days. And yes, I know that this can be grounds for repo, not denying that. What gets me is that we received a call from some guy from the legal department wondering what we were going to do to avoid repo since we were 64 days behind. We called 5/3, and were told we never made March’s pmt (we were being told this in August!). We have a pmt receipt for March’s pmt, as well as a printout showing the pmt made, and how the pmt was put towards the principal and interest. But GUESS WHAT? They didn’t want to hear it! (Shocking right!). Basically called my husband a liar. We set up pmt arrangements for the next week, as to avoid a repo.(this was on a Friday). Guess who shows up on Sunday? That’s right, the repo man….we were very nice to him after all he’s only doing his job, and after all the BS we’ve put up w/ from this bank we were like TAKE IT! Seems like we’re going to get screwed either way right? The repo man even told us he’s heard nothing but horrible things about 5/3. So we put stop pmts on the amounts they were supposed to take out, and now we sit and wait. Oh yea, we got a letter over the weekend regarding our equity loan, my husband called them today about it, and was told they had no record of him having an account ending in the numbers he gave them! We’ve had the account for 7yrs!!! I HATE THIS BANK!!! We cannot get out from under them fast enough!!!

  22. Mary Zaboli says:

I have had the same bad luck with this company and I am very much into loans and borrowing. This is the first time I have been constantly hasseled by any loan firm. They are 100% to be avoided if you have other alternatives. Thanks, they are not worth your time or money. Mary

  24. Downwith5/3 says:

    Problems with 5/3:
    1. No 24 hr. phone tellers
    2. If you don’t have a password for online you have to call them & now you can refer to #1
    3. They pull card purchases from highest to lowest-if you overdraft this incurs more fees. If it’s on a weekend it doesn’t matter what day your debits and credits go through they still go highest to lowest.
    4. You will wait forever if your card gets lost or stolen. It took over 2 mo. for me to get mine.
    ETC.ETC. ETC.

  25. As_Cirrus says:

I had an incorrect maintenance fee charged to my account that caused it to go negative. I had good relations with my local branch, called and, after some discussion, the fee was reversed.

The next day, I had an overdraft charge and continued to be charged daily for the negative balance.

I called the branch, talked to my regular rep and she couldn’t do anything- the manager would have to call. Surprise! He didn’t call nor did he ever return any of the three calls I made to him.

Next step- regional banking center. The person I was told to contact was out- and indicated no other person to contact.

Then, I called the toll-free customer service number. That person took all of the information and said a supervisor would call me back.

    No one called.

At it turns out, my account, had been changed- on a whim- from a no fee account to a “secure” account with identity theft protection!

The entire process took 10 days of calling every day. It wasn’t until I threatened to file a complaint with the Federal Reserve that I got my issue resolved and all of the overdraft fees- $105- were reversed.

  26. Elise 1136975 says:

Well, first of all…after reading all of these comments, I have a few un-biased resonses:
Pay your bills. On time. It does not matter where you bank or where you shop, if you are late with your payment, there will be a penalty.
If you apply for a loan that you cannot afford, it is still your responsibility. If it gets repossesed, you were not responsible enough in the first place, why did you apply for the loan?
Third, if you spend money that you do not have–even on the faith that your deposit might credit–you’re still responsible for the money. The bank did not spend it. YOU did.
If you think depositing a check is a guaranteed availability of money, you’re wrong. First of all, the check may be fraudulent, or more common, a check from somebody (or some business/corporation)that you deposited does not have any funds available. Sorry, the bank cannot draw your money from an account that has no money in it. (Translation: the bank is not going to give any money to you)
If the bank places a hold on a check that means it’s at a high risk of loss to you or the bank. If the bank takes a check and thinks it is a high risk loss to them and in which case they place a hold on it, don’t be mad. If the bank did not place a hold on the funds for a $5,000 check (or $75,000 check) and you spend all that money (just because we made it available to you immediately like you requested/demanded) you are STILL LIABLE for the funds that have been spent. Give the banks the appropriate time frame necessary to collect the funds that are behind a check before they make the funds available to the depositor. People need to realize that fraud is wide spread and thus people and institutions need to take the necessary precautions to protect banks as well as individuals against undue debt.

  27. Ken Tobias says:

Same here folks! 5/3 was our charge card processor for years but it became apparent that their voice approval process could not be trusted. We closed the processing account and went elsewhere but they kept it open and continued to charge small monthly fees. We’ve sent and re-sent the paperwork showing the date the account was closed but still can’t get the fees back!

  28. Jennifer says:

I’m so glad I found this and am reading that I am not the only one 5/3 is completely screwing out of money! This has happened so many times with 5/3 but I will only talk about what took place this past weekend and today. I’m still very upset and will try not to sound like I’m rambling too much….

Saturday November 14th I deposited CASH $400.00 a little after 9 a.m. Left to go shopping for my son’s birthday and for my nephew, who is returning from Iraq next week, after 4 p.m. I checked the bank online and okay, money was posted. Did my shopping and even had a little money left over! Checked it before I throughout the rest of the weekend and last night at 12:15 a.m. right before going to bed and things looked good. I check this bank constantly because of how they move things around, have posted withdraws before deposits even though deposits were made 1-3 days BEFORE the transactions. Well this morning at 7:45 a.m. to my ultimate horror, I’m in the hole $694.00!!!! I paced the floors until I could go to the bank and ask them to explain and reverse these fees. The call center people are beyond rude and tell you to go to your local branch anyway so I didn’t bother with them. Well not only was the personal banker I spoke to so completely rude and unsympathetic, he suggested that I take a class and relearn how to keep a check book (I’m nearing 50. He’s in his 20′s, I’d say). I sat right there and cried even harder when he gleefully informed me that I had yet another $185.00 fees still coming in!

He did not care to even look at my cash deposit slip. The bank manager was nowhere to be found when I requested to see him. The snotty banker told me that “banks haven’t changed and you need to get with the times”. I told him I will be closing my account with 5/3 as soon as I talk to a few people (I have two checks out there for my youngest son’s hockey and I am going to desperately try to reach them and ask them not to run these checks through). He said he would gladly close my account today but he can’t because I still owe the bank more money.

It was at that point I gathered my things and stormed out of the bank crying my eyes out. I heard the snickers of the tellers behind me as well. I had to sit in my car for over ten minutes to get control before I drove. I am still shaking and don’t know what to do. I know contacting 5/3 will be a moot point because it is so obvious they just don’t care about their customers.

Thank you for allowing me to vent with all of you and get this off my chest. Now I’m going to spend the rest of the night in a panic as to how I’m going to take care of this. But I have to say I am comforted by the fact that it’s not just me. Thanks for listening.

  29. Jessica says:

Having been with 5/3 for 10+ AND being a former employee, BE CAREFUL. Fifth-third bank is usurious and borderline fraudulent. After working so hard to pay off my credit cards – which I did 3 months ago – I used my ZERO balance, $10,000 limit 5/3 card to pay for an eye doctor’s appt and new contacts. Two days later, I received a letter in the mail, telling me they had lowered my credit limit to $600!! From $10,000!! The limit, not-so-coincidentally, was $20 above my balance. While talking to several different people to figure out what was going on (no one would tell me why they lowered my balance), I missed my payment and received a $39 charge. Which pushed me over my credit limit – the first time in my entire life that had ever happened. Which screws up my credit score AND the customer service person said they were raising my rate.

THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP TOLD ME THEY ARE LOWERING LIMITS ACROSS THE BOARD IF YOU ARE NOT CLOSE TO YOUR LIMIT OR IF YOU DONT USE THE CARD OFTEN. She also told me this is the reason they lowered my limit. SO, if you pay off your credit card, and they aren’t making money on you, they are determined to screw it out of you.

    DO NOT USE THIS BANK.

  30. James says:

Eddie you could not be more wrong! I can assure you that I do not live anywhere close to paycheck to paycheck. Fifth Third is a joke and worst of all they dont care to improve their customer relations in any way. I refinanced one of my homes through five third after being begged by their home mortgage person to do a loan. . Anyway after I refied the loan they would not give me my interest back. . My loan funded the 6th of OCT and I had paid for the whole month of interest and they refuse to pay me. stating they do monthly interest not daily.. Cost me 1100 !! THey are a fucking joke. . . I even called and got names of people to verify that I would get my interest payment back and was told “absolutely sir.” Now when I call and ask to the same person. .He says sorry sir I misinformed you.. I am about to misinform the hell out of them!

As citizens, we’re all too lazy to do anything meaningful about bank fraud. t is soooooooo simple. CLOSE YOUR TARP BANK ACOUNT. Or, any large bank you prenently bank with. A bank loans 8 to 1 on deposits. close your checking accounts, they lose thier ever lovin #@@(@*#. But, its so much easier to blow hot air on forums, it’ll never change, banks win, you guys lose.

oh, and btw, anyone DUMB enough to have their mortgage and credit cards and checking at the same bank deserve the trouble coming their way. 5/3 bank will FORECLOSE on your home if you stop paying your 5/3 credit card or any other loan product you have with them. its legal, and all of you signed off on it. You may not know you agreed, but you did.

anyway, keep venting, it solves soooooo much.

I have even told people about this site and other sites that have Fifth Third complaints.. the less people they can victimize here the better. And if you think “that can happen to me” or “I know better than.. ” you are a fool.

My husband and I was recently encountered by the great services of 5/3 bank. I say this because we had looked into Fifth Third Bank to refinance our home mortage after a sales call from them. We were pre-approved at the begining and spent a very lengthy month in a half sending them same information to them several different times. Yes, my thoughts exactly what did they do with our private information that had already been sent to them. When I expressed that concern to the person that was over seeing our loan application her response was not very conforting. She appologized several times and said that had they had a community fax machine. I told her that I had also e-mailed the information. She appologized repeatedly but, could not tell me what had happen to the information that was sent to her. Probably not the smartest decission but, my husband and I sent the information again. Then after the lengthy month and half going back and fourth with them and phone calls to them to get a status from them. The lady says our loan was turned down since our home was a manufactured home? I then got very upset since my husband was asked that very question in the very begining and they had told us that it would be approved as long as it was on a permanent foundation which it is. She begin appologizing repeatly again and said that sales person should have been aware of the qualifications for their loan applications. Still not good enough for me and now I’m in fear of this hurting our credit which I feel is not our fault. I’m going to see what I do to dispute it on my credit report and possibly reporting this to the Better Business Buearu. After our experience I would not recommend 5/3 Bank to anyone and can not believe they are still business if this is the way they conduct business!!!

I have banked with Fifth Third for over tewlve years. Eleven of the twelve years were great. This year has been unbelievable. Fifth Third has a 2:00PM policy as we all know; that is if it only works in their’re favor and the 24hour policy isn’t so. I took a car payment to my loan institution after 4:00PM so it wouldn’t post until the following day. I had made a deposit to my fifth third checking the day before but knew that my 24hrs would clear that night. Well guess what, they posted that car payment to my account from another bank that evening before they posted my deposit to my checking account that I hade made 24 hrs prior. I called my banking center & the said thay couldn’t control what another bank does. This is just a small insight to what has been going on. To all the people that have made the comment that it is my fault explain to me why up to a year ago I have banked this exact way & this double standard way of business has just started this year. Think about how much profit they must need to catch back up after loaning people all that money that they had no business loaning. I didn’t get a loan from them but I know that my money they keep stealing is making up for there stupidity. I noticed that it happens about every 3 months then all of a sudden 24hrs becomes 36hrs & my deposit still isn’t posted even though I deposited as cash through the ATM. I know they don’t need to wait for cash to clear right. Tjis is unethical & I am pulling out.

What a nightmare…. A quagmire of officers that have no idea where to send you or what to do. I made the mistake of getting my car loan through this Cincinnati hell-hole of a corporation and have regretted it every step of the way. Fees, misinformation, broken promises. Yikes. I just looked at the CEO online – he was smiling… I’m not. I’m not the CEO of anything, but at least I can feel good about what I bring to the world.

  37. Andy says:

I got car loan from fifth third bank. The loan was on automatic withdrawal. Somehow the automatic withdrawal was halted. I got a phone called from fifth third bank demanding (threatening) the miss payments to be paid that same day. I did not receive any notices whatsoever so i thought it was a prank. He left a message: “Don’t say i didn’t give you a chance.” Turn out that that one call was all they care about. Avoid Fifth Third Bank at all cost. They do not care for their customers!!

  38. Eyvonne says:

When did it become fact that a payroll deposit made in the bank is not available to you immediately, but a direct deposit is?

  39. Gerald says:

An out of control bank. Period.
Go to 53.com, simply print and review their financial statements. They deceive via marketing without overtly lying. For instance, recent boasts from the bank is that they increased commercial lending 1.8 billion dollars for December over November to grow jobs , etc. Truth is, for 2009, commercial lending is down a stunning 5 billion dollars yr over yr data. Thats a depressing number. on average, every 100k creates a small business job. 53 bank ALONE by reducing loan activity cost our region some 50k jobs in 2009. In the banks defense, Americans, especially in the tri-state area are seemingly borderline “socialists”. As a region, we increased our deposits to this bank by a whopping 24%. Not only do we agree with the bailout, we financially endorse socialism on an exponential scale by giving this bank billions more in deposits. Its sad, but numbers dont lie. Another deception that troubles me with this bank is mortgages. Historically, this bank boasted “we never sell our mortgages”. Gave customers a sense that this bank was fantastically capitalized and cared about their customers by keeping the loans internal.
The truth? Anyone reading this, go to their website and find the link as to where your mortgage is now. YOU ARE NOW a loan that has been sold off to Fannie or Freddie. Mysteriously, the bank keeps this info to themselves. In otherwords, they BRAG non stop about their mortgage activity, when in fact, you the people, the taxpayers are 100% guaranteeing YOUR OWN LOANS as Fannie and Freddie are Government Sponsored Entities strapped with taxpayer guarantees. NO RISK to the bank, its OUR risk, yet the bank takes the profits. Same ole boring story, this bank privatizes their profits, and when they do have a bad year or lose money, they have NO PROBLEM socializing losses. Wouldnt it be nice to be 53 bank? Go to Las Vegas, if you win, keep the money. If you lose, the taxpayers bail you out. How WONDERFUL it must be to call yourself Fifth Third Bank.

5/3 is the worst bank I have ever banked with. I have a auto loan with them and always make my payments in plenty of time. But 5/3 would call and say they did not receive there payment a day before it was do and ask to do a payment over the phone. To avoid being late I would do it and the next day they would cash my check. So they would get a double payment that month. So they did this to me several times until I had enough of these games. I will no long give them a payment over the phone just so they can get more money out of me a month.A nd I’m sick of them threating me with making my credit bad if I don’t double pay. Is this happening to anyone else?

I went to the 5th Third Bank Branch in Gibsonton,Fl 02/26/2010 with a check that was given to me by one of their commerical customers. When he wrote it he said go to my bank down the street and they will take care of cashing it. When I presented the check I was told it would be a $5 charge because I did not have an account with them. Asked if I wanted to open an account I anwsered I would not used a bank that would not cash their on check. They got real snotty and said go to your on bank and cash the check. This bank and their employees need a wake up call and I will let all of my customers and anyone else who asks what a bunch of rude and greedy bank they operate.Anywhere but 5th Third Bank.

I am an employee of the bank. My checking account went non sufficient funds due to being short .55 cents and as a result I had to pay 250.00! The following week I went into the branch to make a withdrawl in which I did not have my acct number so I filled out the slip and asked the teller to w/d from my savings, she ended up w/d from my checking! She mixed up the accounts! This caused an overdraft! Employee banking stated that if the Financial Center Manager wrote a letter to employee banking stating it was a bank error they would waive the 222.00 in fees now this was on a wednesday, the transaction happened on a monday, The financial center manager sent over the letter to employee banking but no fees had been waived so I called on Thursday they stated the supervisor would call me back but never did. Friday I called and the supervisor was not in so I spoke to another supervisor now mind you I had accumalated another 169.00 in fees! the supervisor on duty denied the waiving of my fees! $400.00 plus the fees from the prior week cost me over $600.00 in FEES!!!!

I understand your pain. Here in my town, word travels fast and everyone knows everyone’s business. Fifth Third has screwed up so many times it’s unreal. Many many customers have migrated from their bank to Kentucky Bank that sits next door. 53 is notorious for not updating balances properly, and its common practice to fall into the negative balance due to their negligence. So many people around complain about Fifth Third bank. My advice to anyone is to pass on them. They suck badly.

  44. HaroldP says:

Fifth Third stays in business using overdraft fees. Not only are the fee amounts ridiculous. But they are instructed to “screw up” for the sake of profit. They took a huge loss and they are using customers to stay afloat. Please people. Take your business to a different bank before the worst happens to you. Stay away these turds.

  45. AGG says:

Fifth Third Bank sucks!!! I called them to alert them that I had fradualent activity on a PayPal acct and that a large unauthorized charge may be hitting my account and I wanted to alert them that it was fradualent so that I wouldnt be responsible for it and so that my acct wouldnt bounce. Well, they charged me a $33 stop payment fee and then afterwards told me that they couldnt guarantee that they’d be able to “catch” the electronic payment before its deducted from my acct. So Im out of $33 for apparently no reason when the large unauthorized charge may still post to my acct. I’ve been with 5/3 for several years and they get more and more money hungry. Next week I plan to close my acct and only do business with my credit union. I called the 800-972-x0x0 number for myassistance. The local branch is excellent and good customer service but the 800 is such a waste of time!

5th 3rd is TERRIBLE!!!! They turned me over to collections when I had a payment set up with them. Now I find out they deducted a payment from my account along with the payment I paid the collection company and guess what they are giving me a run away about getting my money credited back to my account! This was a payment that I had not authorized. I have been round and round with them on the phone now I have a call into the I Team with fox 5. I can’t believe they wont take responsibility and admit they made a mistake and correct it. I will never ever do business with them again. I am going to get a loan and pay them off! and they haven’t heard the last of me yet!!!!!

So long story short: My Husband started a new job in June ( at a bank) got his first check. Deposited the check the same day and they put a 5 day hold on it no biggie we had to get a short term loan to pay our rent again no biggie through 5/3 they said we have 35 days to pay so I was like ok hubby gets 2 more checks before than……Well good ole 5/3 decides to hold all our funds untill loan is repaid loan was for $495 including intrest check was for $1600 you do the math. Called today and she was like oh I can fix this just hold on one second 48 minutes later she comes back and says the remainder of your money is now available and there was a $10 service charge for these services….. WTF you charge me $10 for putting me on hold & to release my funds…..We will now be banking with my husbands job……5/3 is a f*cked up bank…..Thank goodness we dont have any other loans or balances with them

  48. joe says:

I think it’s ridiculously funny how many people blame 5/3 for their own personal poor financial skills. Like another comment above mentioned – pay your bills on time and don’t spend money you don’t have. You can’t blame 5/3 for putting holds on checks TO PROTECT YOU. Yeah, 5/3 is just covering their own butt by putting holds on checks, so YOU don’t go out and spend money that you don’t have if the check is NSF.

My wife and I have 2 savings accounts, 1 checking account, and 1 mortgage through 5/3 for years and have NEVER once had a problem with them. Go in and meet your local Branch Manager. Having a good relationship with your bank is very important.

Bottom line is you can’t blame 5/3 for your problems. If your car gets repoed, (99.9% of the time) – you made the mistake, not them. Getting mad at them for protecting their investment is ludacris. They gave you money to buy a car, you didn’t pay, car belongs to them – done deal. Same thing with mortgages, it’s all the same excuses (whether it be you lost your job, you couldnt pay, or you just didn’t want to), the bank loaned you money to buy the house, if you can’t pay, the bank is going to foreclose and try to sell the house that you couldn’t pay for. How is that anyone but your own fault?

  49. Troy says:

We went with 5/3 after leaving another big name. What a mistake. Took them THREE times to correct my wife’s name. More recently, we had a purchase from a very bad business (STMachine.com), and after telling us to send the product back and send them all the emails from my and the company to verify the fraudulent nature of the transaction, they agreed to credit us. Now, suddenly, they’ve sided with the business with no reason given. The written evidence I sent them was clear, and now they want us to pay for something we don’t even have. Terrible. We are leaving them asap.

  50. thanks 5/3 trolls of columbus ohio says:

My account was overdrawn 8 cent. (yes 8 cent) for 3 days. They began charging me an 8 dollar a fee, after that reached the “limit” they began charging me 32 dollars more b/c it was too far in the hole. Then (this is MY fault) an automatic debit from some stupid identity theft 5/3 program hit my account. I told them: I’m willing to pay for MY mistake however I would like to talk about the $80 of fees for the 8 cent. I spoke to two people: both ASSHATS who where hateful and condescending. The one guy shrugged and said “I mean, its gonna be 45 days before its a charge off…” My financial life is less than awesome right now– so thank you frumpy b*tch for pointing out my PAST overdraft situations. I hate this bank.
