gedit?

Is there any good reason why gedit doesn’t honor the normal middle button cut/copy/paste function for Linux?

  1. Work for me and has been since many versions. Could it be a mouse malfunction rather than gedit?

Um. No. In some situations gedit won’t allow you to copy text in the editor and paste it with the middle button. It’s a known issue. I just wonder if it’s a bug or a “oh, this is GNOME, people don’t use the middle button” thing.

    What situations exactly?

A gnome bugzilla search reveals some odd middle-button-related bugs, but nothing where it simply doesn’t have an effect.

  4. Joe says:

If I highlight text within gedit itself, and then place the cursor somewhere else and hit the middle button, there’s no effect. I’ve noticed that you can paste if the text is still highlighted — but if you put the cursor in a new spot and *then* hit the middle button, gedit will unhighlight the text and won’t paste anything. In other words, if the text in gedit is not highlighted at the same time you hit the middle button, no dice.

This isn’t typical X behavior, and seems like it may be a bug the more I look at it, rather than desired behavior.

I’m running a recent, if not the most recent, version of gedit in Ubuntu Feisty, but I’ve also seen the same behavior in Edgy and other GNOME-based distros.

I don’t think they consider it a bug. Every gtk app I use works this way, and I’ve been assuming it’s normal.

    *tries a Qt app*

    And that allows it. Curious.

Here we go. Found a bug: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=333514

The bug, which has been around for over a year, seems to have deteriorated into an argument over an unrelated issue, and it is still UNCONFIRMED. So I don’t know what to make of that.
